Sazerac is a terrific spicy rye from Buffalo Trace in a great old-time bottle. We understand this to be six years old. Great in a Manhattan, especially with Carpano's Antica Formula vermouth.
The whiskey is named for the Sazerac Coffee House in New Orleans, birthplace of the famous – and sublime – Sazerac cocktail. The Coffee House was acquired by Thomas H Handy, owner also of Peychaud’s Bitters. Originally, he sold bottles of the Sazerac cocktail, which was originally made with Cognac. Today, this glorious libation is produced at the Buffalo Trace distillery.
This rye whiskey was first released in early 2016, by Sagamore Spirit in Baltimore, Maryland.
The whiskey is sourced from Indiana, matured in 53-gallon barrels for two years, before being cut down to the bottling strength of 83 proof using limestone-filtered spring water. The finished product is actually a blend of two rye recipes--one that is high rye-based and another that is low rye-based--developed by a team of experts led by master distiller Larry Ebersold, whose tenure at Seagram's spanned three decades. The Sagamore Spirit distillery is currently open and operational, with the brand putting away its own stock for future releases.
This bold rye earned 92 points from Beverage Tasting Institute in 2016, and a Gold medal at the New York Spirits Competition in 2017.
Rabbit Hole uses locally sourced grains and flame-charred barrels from Louisville's Kelvin Cooperage. Their Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey has a mash bill of 95% rye and 5% malted barley. The rye is distilled and aged for at least 2 years in Kentucky before being bottled at 47.5% ABV. The whiskey is contract distilled while they await their distillery's opening scheduled for 2018.
A cult bourbon with a very high rye content in the mash, which provides a spicy kick on the palate. A very traditional old-style bourbon, not for the faint-hearted.
During Prohibition, Old Grand-Dad was produced by a pharmaceutical company, the American Medicinal Spirits Co., and was one of the few distilled spirits permitted to be prescribed as medicine.
Old Grand-Dad was a distiller named Basil Hayden who made his name by distilling a bourbon whiskey made with a higher percentage of rye. Basil Hayden passed along the art of distilling to his son and then, in turn, to his grandson. It was the third generation distiller, Colonel R.B. Hayden, who honored his grandfather by naming his justly famed whiskey “Old Grand-Dad.”
This whisky is truly a delight for the senses and will be sure to please even the most discerning whisky connoisseur. Enjoy it neat or on the rocks for an unforgettable experience.
This is another great-tasting release that’s on par with the quality fans of Michter’s have come to expect. It’s complex, has great depth of flavour, and very well balanced with bold classic bourbon flavours and a good kick of spice.Something else I found interesting about this barrel is that it has a very decent heft of spice throughout. Traditionally Michter’s whiskies are very well-polished and don’t have any fiery burn as you sip them- to maximise their enjoyment. Michter’s 10 year old bourbon, however, has always toed this line with what I assume is a high-rye bourbon, giving drinkers a sharp enough spice bite to feel it but not enough to burn, instead prickling the tongue as it passes.
One of the most limited production items, Michter's 10 Year Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Rye continues the legacy of America’s first whiskey variety (rye) from America's first whiskey company (Michter's, originally known as Shenk's).
After a nearly three-year absence from the market, Michter’s then Master Distiller Willie Pratt finally gave the green light for the re-release of Michter's 10 Year Straight Rye in April 2014.
Made aged in thoroughly dried barrels, the Michter's 10-Year-Old Single Barrel Straight Rye Whiskey is an aggressively bold single barrel whiskey brimming with flavors. The Michter's 10-Year-Old Single Barrel Straight Rye Whiskey is a masterfully crafted single barrel whiskey with a mash bill that's at least 51% rye, which gives the blend that smoky and robust natural flavors that earned a cult following around the world. The Michter's 10-Year-Old Single Barrel Straight Rye Whiskey is a small batch single barrel whiskey made for the die-hard whiskey lover.
Lot 40 Rye is a legendary Canadian rye whisky that is produced in a single copper pot still. At some point during the 2000s, Lot 40 Rye was discontinued, which caused quite a stir among whisky enthusiasts who considered it to be one of the best Canadian whiskies out there. Luckily, this delicious drop has been relaunched - so fill your boots!
Each farmer’s spirits were unique and reflected their personal tastes and the local terroir of their farm. Jefferson’s Reserve Very Old Straight Bourbon Whiskey is crafted by Chet and Trey Zoeller in honor of Jefferson and his experimental nature. While the Zoellers were inspired by Jefferson, their roots can be traced back for generations deep into Kentucky’s bourbon history.
As a pharmaceutical drink‚ it was used to snuff coughs‚ colds‚ sore throats‚ bronchitis‚ asthma‚ pneumonia‚ consumption‚ sniffles‚ grippes and chills‚ diseases of the throat‚ chest and lungs. No ailment great or small was immune to rock and rye's therapeutic might. Later‚ as men reacquired a taste for it and began drinking it for pleasure again‚ it became an American standard‚ prepared and bottled by distillers and bootleggers alike as it migrated back from the pharmacy to the bar.
Hochstadter’s has a mellow, slightly sweet flavor — the notes of spicy rye are nicely balanced with the sweet flavors of citrus, grapefruit and rock candy. Bottled at 84 proof, it has a smooth, long finish with hints of honey and orange.
This rye was crafted by Dave Pickerell, who was previously the Master Distiller as Maker's Mark in Loretto, Kentucky.
Following distillation, the rye whiskey is matured in traditional oak casks before being double-barreled, or finished, in secondary casks. The secondary casks are composed of American oak and have been charred with a #4 char. In addition, the staves of the secondary casks were air-seasoned for over two years prior to the casks' assembly. As a result, the secondary casks contribute strong notes of vanilla and caramelized wood sugars to the rye, while minimizing bitter tannins that are often present in kiln dried oak.
As American as the bald eagle, rye whiskey was first brewed in the American Northeast in the 1600s. Even George Washington distilled it after leaving the Oval Office, so there’s no way of denying its origin.
It’s distinguished from bourbon for its original and unique spicy notes.
